our Story

Born at 3,600 metres above the world

Our roots are in La Paz, Bolivia — one of the highest cities on Earth, sitting at 3,600 metres above sea level, cradled by the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Real and overlooked by the mighty Illimani. For our team, growing up at altitude wasn't a lifestyle choice; it was simply life. The thin air, the vast open sky of the Altiplano, and the deep blue of Lake Titicaca — the highest navigable lake in the world — shaped how we see everything.

From the beginning we were drawn to the landscapes surrounding La Paz: the ancient ruins of Tiwanaku, the pilgrimage town of Copacabana on the shores of Titicaca, and the trails that wind through Bolivia into Peru — past Machu Picchu and beyond. The Andes were not a destination. They were home.

Over the years, our journey took us from the Andes to New Jersey, USA. Living between two worlds taught us something no guidebook could: what foreign travellers actually need to know before setting foot on Andean soil. The questions they ask, the gear they get wrong, the cultural gaps that turn adventures into ordeals — we've seen them all from both sides.

Our foundation in Failure Analysis Engineering trained us to ask one question relentlessly: why do things fail? Whether it's a material under stress or a travel plan that falls apart at 4,500 metres, the methodology is the same — find the root cause, eliminate the risk, build a solution that actually works. That's what this blog is: a practical, engineer-tested guide for anyone who wants to discover the Andes without the avoidable mistakes.

Why Trust This Guide

An Engineer Who Thinks Differently

Our professional background as Failure Analysis Engineering has trained us to do one thing exceptionally well: understand why things fail — and find the practical fix before the problem compounds. That same methodology drives every recommendation on this site.

Failure Analysis Mindset

Trained to identify root causes and prevent cascading problems — I apply the same rigour to gear reviews, route planning and travel logistics that I use in the lab.

Born & Raised at Altitude

Over 20 years living in La Paz means I understand the Altiplano, the culture, and the practical realities of high-altitude life in a way no tourist ever could.

The Andes–US Bridge

Living in New Jersey gave me the perspective of both worlds. I know exactly what American and international travellers need — and what the Andes will throw at them.

Practical, Tested Advice

No filler, no fluff. Every recommendation on this site is filtered through the same question: does this actually work when things get hard on the trail?

Plan Your Trip with Confidence

These are the services I personally recommend to anyone travelling to the Andes. Each one has been selected because it genuinely serves adventurous travellers — not just because of a commission. If you book through these links, I earn a small fee at no extra cost to you, which keeps this guide free and independent.

Editorial Independence

Honest by design. As a Failure Analysis Engineer, my job is to find what doesn't work and fix it — I apply that same standard here. Affiliate links help keep this site free, but they never influence what I recommend. If a service doesn't meet the standards I'd hold my own family to when travelling the Andes, it doesn't appear on this page.
